To begin making the dryer vent hose pumpkin decorations you will start with some dryer vent hose. These hoses are usually either white or silver foil. Cut them to a length suitable for the pumpkin size you want to make, approximately 2 feet long.
Using the hot glue gun, put glue along the cut edge of the vent hose and put the two ends of the hose together. While drying you will want to put clips at the edges to hold the two ends together, or you can staple them together.
Once they are fully dry, approximately an hour or so, you can spray paint the vent hoses. Be sure to do this in an area that is protected from the over-spray of the spray paint, and since you will have to hold the vent hose to turn it to spray all of the areas, you may want to use rubber gloves or latex gloves that you can throw out afterwards, so you don’t get paint on your hands.
An alternative would be to hand paint with acrylic paints. This will allow your residents to do it themselves, but it will be time consuming. If that’s not a problem, like when they are listening to a radio show or audio book aloud, for instance, it might be a nice craft they can do to prep for when they will decorate their pumpkins. Hand painting may also require two coats.
Once the spray painted vent hoses are dry you can begin adding embellishments to decorate them.
Add a stick to the top to make it look like a pumpkin stem, or use construction paper or brown wrap paper for this, and then glue or tie raffia, twine or yarn around the stem. If you’re making a few of these for a group arrangement, you can consider painting some of them different colours, or a combination of colours and once grouped in a display, you can add more items to the group such as fall flowers like sunflowers, pine cones and gourds. Fake fall leaves from the dollar store are a good idea for this and they aren’t expensive.
