This No-Bake Clay Recipe is fun and simple to do with the added bonus of being non-toxic. You can make as much or as little as you need, just adjust the recipe.
The ingredients are:
- 1 cup corn starch
- 2 cups baking soda
- 1 teaspoon alum
- 1 1/4 cups cold water
- several bowls
- Food coloring or paint (depending on the paint used, this could render the clay toxic)
- Saucepan
- Paper plate
- Small towel or cloth
- Newspaper
- Clear shellac or acrylic spray (toxic) Optional. Do not allow residents to use this themselves.
Instructions to make the clay:
Mix cornstarch and baking soda together. Sifting will help to prevent any lumps. Add the water. Heat in a saucepan over medium heat for a few minutes, 3 to 5 minutes should be good. Once it is as thick as cooked mashed potatoes, remove from heat. Put this aside until cool enough to handle. You could remove it from the saucepan and place on a paper plate. Covering it with a cool towel would help prevent it from drying as it cools.
The dough can be divided up if you want to make colored dough before making your craft projects.
Three methods to color the clay for your clay craft.
- Add food coloring to the water before making the dough.
- Add paint to the dough after it is made and before it is shaped into your crafts.
- Wait to paint the item after it is fully dried.
Once you have completed your craft, including painting it and it is fully dried, you could cover it in clear shellac or acrylic spray. Do not let the residents use this themselves and avoid use all-together if you want to avoid any toxic ingredients.
Push molds are great for clay crafts.
